Chris Thompson: Are we really through with religion in Anchorage?
I often agree with Chris Thompson, or at least appreciate his perspective. But in this column he takes exception to (what he sees as a disparaging) distinction between the Gospel of Jesus Christ and religion.
First, it’s Biblical. There are words translated “religion” that appear in the New Testament, but they appear only four times: one positive, one neutral, and two negative. By contrast, gospel/good news and related words appear over 100 times! Beyond that, it’s not hostile or hateful to draw meaningful distinctions. Religion is something we do for ourselves. Gospel is good news about something that Christ did for us. I’ve known Muslims, Jews, Hindus, and other members of world religions, and none of them would have described their faith except as a religion.
