Ed Stetzer is concerned about the Epidemic of Bible Illiteracy in Our Churches:
Almost 1 in 5 churchgoers say they never read the Bible—essentially the same number who read it every day. … When given a list of stories, almost 1 in 3 didn’t choose the Nativity as part of the Bible and over half (59 percent) didn’t know that Jonah being swallowed by the great fish is in the Bible.
He goes on to say that biblical illiteracy has led to a lack of biblical doctrine, and that certainly seems to be the case both within and outside the church. He also identified small groups as being critical to addressing the problem. You can’t learn everything you need to know from a 20-minute message once a week, even assuming you attend regularly.
